Check out the main news that have moved Foreign Trade over the last few days!

Paranaguá Port registers daily shipments record

The Port of Paranaguá, in the state of Paraná, is one of the nation’s busiest and largest ports, hence its extreme importance to the outflow of products from the southern region. On April 12th, the terminal registered the highest daily shipment volume of the year. In all, 117,798 tons of soy were loaded, which is a very expressive number that tends to increase with the good harvest. Considering total volume for the first semester, through the export corridors East and West of the Port of Paranaguá, 5,999,490 tons of bulk were loaded, meaning 7% more than in 2022.

Cabotage stimulates logistics in Brazil’s northern region

Cabotage is the transport among ports in the same country. Because Brazil has an extensive coastline and many important cities located near the sea, this type of transportation becomes an attractive option for several sectors, such as agriculture, industry, and commerce.

Besides being a more economical and sustainable option compared to road transport, cabotage is a significant alternative for the reduction of congestion on the roads and the improvement of safety in cargo transport.

Over the last decade, this type of transport has grown approximately 8% a year, and the northern region has been one to be well explored in this regard.

The city of Manaus, which is home to the very important Manaus Free Trade Zone, has benefited from the increase in cabotage which, despite still facing several challenges, has become a great alternative for local companies.

Brazil reaches a new record in agribusiness exports

During the first quarter, Brazilian agribusiness exports reached a record of US$36 billion. Soybeans were the high point for the success of the new harvest that started in March. Already in March, the revenue obtained from agribusiness exports hit a record for the period, as it totaled US$16 billion.

Soybean, chicken meat and sugar were the main highlights in relation to shipments for export, and China was the main destination of these products.

Keep following us and stay on top of the main updates!

Beef exports to China more than doubled last year

Last year, between the months of January and December, Brazilian beef exports to China more than doubled to generate US$ 7.95 billion in revenue. China was responsible for buying almost 70% of all the beef exported by Brazil. Right behind China, the United States, Chile, and Egypt stand out as the main destinations for our national beef.

China is the biggest export destination for 14 Brazilian states

China is Brazil’s biggest trade partner, since it is the central destination of our exports and also the primary origin of everything we import. Recently, an interesting piece of data has been released to report the participation of the country in each of the Brazilian States, revealing, likewise, that the Brazilian States where China is their shipments’ main destination are: Tocantins, Pará, Goiás, Piauí, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Rondônia and SP.

Thus, it seems important to note the growing participation of the Asian giant inside our own economy, as well as in Brazilian culture as a whole.

Galeão Airport breaks a record concerning cargo movement

Last year, the Galeão Airport (GIG), located in Rio de Janeiro, registered a historical record, in regard to cargo handling activities, reaching 55 thousand tons of imports and exports over the year. Compared to 2021, there was an increase of 15% and, if also compared to 2019, during the pre-pandemic period, it’s a 33% increase.

• Ethanol import tax exemption has come to an end.

In an attempt to encourage the production as well as the domestic sale of ethanol, the government has decided to end a tax exemption on its imports. The United States – currently our main supplier of Ethanol – has already reacted an issued a statement about the decision, since it could mean a significant business decline to Brazil. From now on, fuel imports will be taxed at 16%, with a possible 18% for next year.

• Brazilian port handling reached 1.2 billion tons in 2022.

Foreign Trade never stops and Brazil is still going strong. It keeps reaching historical records! Last year, the country got its highest annual result, handling 1.2 billion tons. The Ports of Santos, Suape, Itaqui, and Paranaguá are to be highlighted.

• Beef and chicken exports register growth.

Brazil has a strong international relevance in the meat market. According to data released by the Brazilian Association of Meatpacking Companies (ABRAFRIGO), last month, chicken exports reached US$856.6 million, which is equivalent to more than 420 thousand tons, a high of 40% and 20%, respectively. Regarding the shipments of beef, it had a 17% growth in volume and 7% with respect to revenue, achieving 183 thousand tons and US$ 851 million. China continues to be the main destination of our meat with a 57% share.

Check out some of the highlights regarding Foreign Trade news last week!

Trade Balance tops a US$2.7 billion surplus.

The first month of the year’s Trade Balance has recorded a US$2.7 billion surplus, and has become the highest value for January since 2006.

Exports reached US$23.1 billion, while imports totaled US$20.4 billion. Oil and corn were the major high points in terms of exports.

Brazilian coffee exports set a historical record.

Last year, Brazilian coffee exports set an all-time record in terms of foreign exchange revenue, reaching US$8.5 billion, 46.7% over 2021.

About the volume of coffee that has been shipped, a decrease of 6.6% was registered. The international appreciation of commodities, however, caused the price per kilogram of coffee to rise by more than 55%, which explains its national revenue increase.

Brazil will no longer exempt imports of ethanol.

Despite being an important producer and exporter of ethanol, part of Brazil’s fuel is obtained externally. Since the United States remains as our main supplier, the decision has agitated North Americans, who will pay a 16% tax to export ethanol to the country. In addition, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2024 this tax will be increase to 24%.

Even when the import tax on ethanol was zeroed in March, last year, in order to curb fuel inflation in the country, the decision to reinstate the tax will still prevail.

Brazil and Argentina discuss a common currency

One of the most commented subjects in the last month was the possibility of an eventual single currency between Brazil and Argentina; the new currency would facilitate commercial exchanges between the two countries and stimulate exports to our neighbor.

During his first international trip, President Lula met with Argentine President Alberto Fernández and discussed various matters of bilateral interest. The issue of creating a common currency, however, will have to be debated by their economic teams before any definitive decision is finally made. It is also important to emphasize that this currency – which would be called “Sur” – a priori, would not replace either the Brazilian real or the Argentine peso.

Maersk and MSC announce the end of the 2M alliance

In 2015, the shipping giants, Maersk and MSC created an alliance to operate together in the international market, thus facilitating and boosting both companies.

Last week, Maersk announced that the contract, which is valid for 10 years, will not be renewed, thereby the end of the “2M alliance” will be in 2025.

The U.S. revokes import barrier against Brazilian steel

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has just announced that the US International Trade Commission decided to revoke the application of a tariff on steel that had existed since 1993. This removal will be of great interest for the national steel sector, which will surely expand its market in the U.S. territory.

According to recent data released by LATAM Cargo, last year’s most internationally transported cargo on board Brazilian aircraft were automotive accessories and parts, footwear and machinery; they represented more than a half of the volume exported from Brazil abroad and were followed by other items such as fruits, flowers, vegetables, fish, textiles, medicines and vaccines.

2) Brazil’s participation in the World Economic Forum

From January 15 to January 20, the city of Davos, Switzerland, hosted one of the most important international events in the world – the World Economic Forum.
The Brazilian delegation included Fernando Haddad and Marina Silva, who, among many other topics, have also debated environmental and Amazon preservation issues.

3) Brazil records hit wheat harvest and reduces foreign dependency

Historically, Brazil is a great importer of wheat. However, with the increase of the harvest during the past few years, this external dependence has been reduced, consequently increasing the Brazilian highlight in cereal exports.

Brazil reported a record movement concerning wheat in 2022, with the import and export of 8.78 million tons during that period, being 5.71 million tons coming from imports and 3.07 for exports, almost three times higher than the record during 2021.

4) China begins New Year’s celebrations

On January 22, China began the celebrations of one of the most important holidays for its population, the Chinese New Year. They celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Rabbit – year 4721. As a result, this week is full of celebrations with age-old traditions and a high flow of people all over the country.

Check out the main news about Brazil and the world that caught the attention of the Foreign Trade field last week:

Brazil sets record in chicken exports

Chicken is among the main products exported by Brazil for its great prominence in several Asian countries, considering that the Brazilian shipments of poultry meat registered a record value last year of US$8.8 billion. For 2023, the expectations are for an increase in the number of shipments of chicken meat and a consequent rise in its revenue and its exporting volume.

US announces new US$3 billion military aid to Ukraine

Almost a year ago, Russia carried out the first attacks on Ukrainian territory, which started a war in the region. Such wave of violence and attacks has been compromising the European economy and logistics ever since.

To mitigate the impacts of the war, and as an attempt to put an end to those attacks – which have already destroyed several cities and took thousands of people’s lives – the United States announced US$3.75 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. Since the beginning of the conflict, the U.S. has already sent approximately US$25 billion to that country.

World Bank warns of global recession risk

Last week, the World Bank released concerns about the direction of the world economy in 2023. The warning was contained in the semi-annual Global Economic Prospects report and indicated that global growth is likely to slow down this year, causing many countries to resort to foreign aid.

Strong economies such as those of the USA, the European Union countries, and China are registering significant declines, affecting the world into this wave of recession that must be prevented with a series of measures to be studied by the governments.
