The Port of Paranaguá, in the state of Paraná, is one of the nation’s busiest and largest ports, hence its extreme importance to the outflow of products from the southern region. On April 12th, the terminal registered the highest daily shipment volume of the year. In all, 117,798 tons of soy were loaded, which is a very expressive number that tends to increase with the good harvest. Considering total volume for the first semester, through the export corridors East and West of the Port of Paranaguá, 5,999,490 tons of bulk were loaded, meaning 7% more than in 2022.

Cabotage stimulates logistics in Brazil’s northern region

Cabotage is the transport among ports in the same country. Because Brazil has an extensive coastline and many important cities located near the sea, this type of transportation becomes an attractive option for several sectors, such as agriculture, industry, and commerce.

Besides being a more economical and sustainable option compared to road transport, cabotage is a significant alternative for the reduction of congestion on the roads and the improvement of safety in cargo transport.

Over the last decade, this type of transport has grown approximately 8% a year, and the northern region has been one to be well explored in this regard.

The city of Manaus, which is home to the very important Manaus Free Trade Zone, has benefited from the increase in cabotage which, despite still facing several challenges, has become a great alternative for local companies.

Brazil reaches a new record in agribusiness exports

During the first quarter, Brazilian agribusiness exports reached a record of US$36 billion. Soybeans were the high point for the success of the new harvest that started in March. Already in March, the revenue obtained from agribusiness exports hit a record for the period, as it totaled US$16 billion.

Soybean, chicken meat and sugar were the main highlights in relation to shipments for export, and China was the main destination of these products.

Did you know that Brazil is one of the largest cocoa producers in the world? It is incredible how it has become increasingly important for the country’s economy. If you are passionate about chocolate or simply want to understand more about this process, this text is dedicated to you!

In this article, we promise to explore everything you need to know about the export of Brazilian cocoa, from production to the arrival at its final destination. You’ll learn about the two most commonly used varieties of cocoa, as well as about the export certifications and regulations procedures. In addition, we will show you how the cocoa industry has been a major source of income for the Brazilian economy.

Cocoa export has been a significant source of income for the Brazilian economy. In addition, the cocoa industry also generates direct and indirect jobs for thousands of people in the country. However, for cocoa exports to continue growing and remain competitive in the international market, it is substantial that producers and exporters know the details and nuances of the process.

In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about exporting Brazilian cocoa, ranging from the choice of cocoa varieties to the logistics of shipping the beans to their destination.

Cocoa production in Brazil

Cocoa production in Brazil began in the 17th century, when slaves were brought from Africa to work on the farms. Since then, the country has become one of the largest cocoa producers, with an annual harvest of more than 400,000 tons.

Most of the cocoa production in Brazil takes place in the Northeast region, especially in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Alagoas, where most of the producers are small farmers. The choice of those territories is due to the hot and humid climate, which is ideal for the cultivation of this product.

Brazilian cocoa’s quality is highly valued due to its unique characteristics, such as its distinct flavor and aroma. In addition, its local production is done in a sustainable way, which has become substantial for international buyers.

The Export Process

After the harvest, the cocoa is sent to the shelling factories where it is transformed into shelled beans, ready to be exported. During the shelling process, the cocoa is cleaned and separated from the husks to ensure its quality and prepare it for the next step: processing.

Brazil is the main exporter of cocoa in the planet, and its main destinations are some countries in Europe, North America and Asia. Before being exported, the cocoa is submitted to rigorous quality controls, including flavor, aroma and color analysis. Such control is carried out to ensure that the product meets international requirements standards and its safety for consumption.

In addition, the cocoa also undergoes government inspections to guarantee every regulatory requirement. Those are key inspections to ensure the goals for quality and safety, as well as to protect the interest of international buyers and Brazil itself.

After passing all the quality checks, the cocoa is packed and shipped to its destination. Cocoa exports are a considerable part of the Brazilian economy and play a key role in generating income and employment. With global demand for cocoa increasing, its export is an important opportunity for Brazil to take advantage of and increase its presence within the international market.

Destinations

Once the cocoa is packed and approved for export, it is sent to its destination, where it will be transformed into a final product, such as chocolate, and so on.

In Europe, France, Germany and Switzerland, are Brazilian cocoa’s main export destinations. The United States are also huge buyers, as well as Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea.

Benefits of cocoa exports for the Brazilian economy

The cocoa industry has become a significant source of income for the Brazilian economy, providing a positive impact on both employment generation and the country’s economic growth, since Brazil is recognized as one of the largest producers of cocoa in the world.

The global demand for cocoa has increased considerably, thus making its export a great opportunity for the country to strengthen its presence in the international market and contribute even more to its economy. In addition, the cocoa industry is also responsible for providing jobs for a large amount of people, especially in the countryside regions, where most of the cocoa farms are located.

Certifications and regulations for cocoa exports

Before being exported, Brazilian cocoa must pass through a series of inspections and regulations that are usually established by the government and international organizations. They serve to ascertain the quality and safety of the product and also the international buyers’ demands.

Among the most common certifications for cocoa exports, an organic certification, to guarantee a non-agrochemical production and a fair-trade certification, to value ethical practices during the production and marketing process, need to be mentioned. In addition, there are sanitary and phytosanitary regulations that must be followed to ensure the safety of the food and prevent the spread of diseases.

The certifications and approvals of cocoa for export are made by various agencies, such as the Brazilian Agricultural Sanitary Defense Agency, which is responsible for verifying the compliance of agricultural products with the established sanitary and phytosanitary standards, including the export of cocoa. Besides, there is the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), also responsible for monitoring the quality of agricultural products for export.

Cocoa varieties and their relevance regarding exportation

Along the industry, two main varieties of cocoa are usually considered: Forastero and Criollo. The Forastero is the most widely cultivated variety, known for its high yield and resistance to pests and diseases. Meanwhile, Criollo is considered the finest for its flavor and aroma complexity.

In Brazil, most of the cocoa production involves forastero cocoa, but the criollo can also be found, especially in the Northern region of the country. It is ideal to know the characteristics of each variety and choose the one that meets the demands of buyers along the international market.

Buyers look for specific cocoa varieties depending on the use, for example, the chocolate industry values the criollo species and the pharmaceutical industry looks for the forastero. The climatic and geographical conditions of the production region also influence the quality of the cocoa.

Cocoa production and processing

After the fruits are harvested, the cocoa beans undergo a fermentation and drying process before being packed and shipped for export.

The fermentation process is crucial to the final quality of the cocoa, since it is at this specific moment that the beans acquire their characteristic flavor and aroma. Therefore, it is important that the fermentation process is carried out correctly, and thus guarantee the quality of the cocoa beans that is destined for export.

Conclusion

For the reasons already mentioned, we may easily verify how fundamental to the Brazilian economy the export of cocoa is, since it provides an important source of income and contributes to the economic growth of the country. Moreover, with the growing global demand for cocoa, Brazil has the chance to expand its presence in the international market and stand out as a key player in the industry. With that, the cocoa industry also has a positive impact on society, by generating jobs and contributing to local development.

The Origins of Carnival

Carnival is one of the oldest festivals in history and has its roots in pagan celebrations dating back to the 3rd century B.C. in Ancient Greece. At the time, the feast of Dionysus (or Bacchus, as the Greeks called him), the god of agriculture and wine, was held with music, dancing, and the exhibition of masks to mark the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

With the expansion of the Roman Empire, the tradition was incorporated into the culture of the people they conquered and, over time, evolved into what we now know as Carnival.

Carnival in Brazil

When the Portuguese arrived in Brazil, in 1500, they brought their Carnival traditions with them, which, over the centuries, were adapted and ended up incorporating rich indigenous and African influences.

The first record of a Carnival held in Brazil occurred in 1641, in Rio de Janeiro. The party has been an integral part of Brazilian culture, since. Over the centuries, Carnival gained ever-increasing proportions and became a true expression of Brazilian creativity and joy.

Today, Carnival is one of the most anticipated parties of the year in Brazil and attracts millions of tourists from all over the world to the streets of the main local cities, such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife.

How does Carnival impact Brazilian foreign trade?

Have you wondered why Carnival is important for Brazilian foreign trade? We will explore Carnival’s impact on foreign trade businesses through this article, examining which activities are affected during this festive period. It is common for people to associate Carnival with days of revelry; the truth is that the its consequences go beyond the streets and affect the country’s economy.

First, it is important to note that Carnival is not officially a long holiday, although many companies and public agencies close their doors during this time; thus, the impact of Carnival on foreign trade varies according to the type of commercial activity involved.

With regard to ports, most continue to operate as usual during Carnival, although some ports may operate with reduced staff, which might lead to minor delays around some of the operations. This can particularly happen in ports located in cities with a strong Carnival culture.

In the case of airports, commercial flights should not be affected, nor should cargo flights be, since they continue to operate normally. It is important to note, however, that there might be a reduction in the number of flights during this specific time of the year, with the delays in some deliveries as a consequence.

Factories and foreign trade companies can also be affected by Carnival. Some companies may close their doors during the days of revelry, while others may operate with a reduced team, causing delays in production and in the delivering process.

In summary, although Carnival is not officially a long holiday in Brazil, it still has a significant impact on the country’s foreign trade. While many commercial activities will continue to operate normally during the Carnival period, it will be important to be aware of the possible delays and interruptions typical of this festive season.

Which ports will close during Carnival?

It is common for most Brazilian ports to maintain their normal operating activities during the Carnival period, due to the importance of foreign trade for the nation, which cannot be interrupted because of a long holiday.

However, in some locations with a strong Carnival tradition, there may be a lack of employees working in the ports with its consequential delays in their operations, especially if the loading and unloading demands are extremely high at that moment. Such reduction in the number of employees can be justified by the fact that many people take advantage of the long holiday to travel and have fun, or, on the other hand, it could be that port workers participate in parades and Carnival blocks. However, please note that the port’s essential services, such as customer service, remain on duty during Carnival to ensure the continuity of activities.

Therefore, it is always good for companies that use port services to be aware of possible delays and unforeseen events during Carnival and carry out prior planning to minimize those impacts. In addition, if its urgent, you can always contact the Port Guard for information and support. It is worth remembering that, despite the possibility of delays in some locations, most Brazilian ports work normally during the Carnival period, maintaining their regular operational activities and contributing to the development of the country’s foreign trade. Anyway, it is recommended that foreign trade companies and professionals themselves contact ports and service providers to obtain updated information on operating conditions during the period. This can help them to avoid potential delays or disruptions to business operations.

We’ll now offer you some useful information about the largest port in Brazil, the port of Santos, but remember to check the operating conditions of the port of your interest, as there might be differences in relation to their working team and opening hours.

The Port Authority of Santos (SPA) informed – in a statement directed to users – that, due to the Carnival holiday, the Company’s administrative services will be suspended from February 20 to 22, corresponding to Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. However, essential user support services will operate on an on-call basis. So, it will be possible to guarantee the continuity of port operations, even during the extended holiday period. That means that the Port of Santos will function normally.

For emergencies, the Port Authority has provided a telephone number: (+55 13) 3202-6570.

Therefore, it is fundamental that companies and foreign trade professionals are aware of it, once more, to avoid possible delays or interruptions in commercial operations during the period of Carnival.

How about the airports? What about the IRS?

To meet demands during Carnival, the Customs Office of Guarulhos, located at the GRU Airport Cargo, will operate on duty, due to the optional point throughout federal public offices. Therefore, working hours and services will follow the same as on regular weekends, including customs transit and the release of green channel import declarations. Customs will return to normal operations on Wednesday, February 22, at 2 pm.

At the airport of Campinas, the Viracopos Customs will have specific parameterization schedules for Customs Transit Declarations (DTAs) as well as for Import Declarations (DIs). DTAs will be analyzed and received only on Saturday, on February 18.

The resumption of analysis and reception of DTAs activities will take place on Ash Wednesday, on February 22, at 2:00 p.m. Conversely, DIs will have manual analyses and releases on Saturday and Sunday, (February 18 and 19), until 9 p.m. DIs manual resumptions of analyses and releases will be on Ash Wednesday, on February 22, 2023, starting at 2 p.m.

Conclusion

If they’re willing to avoid any delays and operation disruptions, it is essential that foreign trade companies and professionals plan accordingly so they can be able to deal without major difficulties with the large volume of processes during the post-holiday period. This is why it seems important to be aware of the provided information and take the necessary measures to minimize any possible impacts.

• Ethanol import tax exemption has come to an end.

In an attempt to encourage the production as well as the domestic sale of ethanol, the government has decided to end a tax exemption on its imports. The United States – currently our main supplier of Ethanol – has already reacted an issued a statement about the decision, since it could mean a significant business decline to Brazil. From now on, fuel imports will be taxed at 16%, with a possible 18% for next year.

• Brazilian port handling reached 1.2 billion tons in 2022.

Foreign Trade never stops and Brazil is still going strong. It keeps reaching historical records! Last year, the country got its highest annual result, handling 1.2 billion tons. The Ports of Santos, Suape, Itaqui, and Paranaguá are to be highlighted.

• Beef and chicken exports register growth.

Brazil has a strong international relevance in the meat market. According to data released by the Brazilian Association of Meatpacking Companies (ABRAFRIGO), last month, chicken exports reached US$856.6 million, which is equivalent to more than 420 thousand tons, a high of 40% and 20%, respectively. Regarding the shipments of beef, it had a 17% growth in volume and 7% with respect to revenue, achieving 183 thousand tons and US$ 851 million. China continues to be the main destination of our meat with a 57% share.

It was January 28, 1808 – the milestone of the royal family arrival in Brazil – when Prince D. João signed the decree that opened the ports. Such decree settled the beginning of the affairs with friendly nations, making it possible for the Brazilian market to start receiving English goods, thus breaking the colonial pact.

This is how Brazil began its connections with the world, the links of global scope that carry out the movement, transshipment, and cargo storage to supply, not only Brazilian, but global needs. In the year of 2023, we are seeing record-breaking annual cargo movements along the Brazilian ports, but what ports are we talking about? We’ll find out more about them in the text below!

What are the major ports in Brazil?

Brazil has around 175 cargo port facilities throughout the extensive national territory, which includes river and lake structures, such as terminals, ports and waterway facilities. Out of all these installations, 76 are located off the coastline, 52 of them are in the north, 6 in the mid-west and 18 of them are in the southern region of Brazil.

The seven largest Brazilian ports are presented below, although they’re not necessarily the ones that handle the most cargo movement:

Port of Santos, in São Paulo: located on the Atlantic coast, it is the largest port in Brazil. It accounts for more than 70% of the national cargo volume;

Paranaguá Port: located in Paraná, it is Brazil’s second largest port;

Port of Itajaí: located on the coast of Santa Catarina, it is the third largest port in Brazil;

Port of Rio Grande: Located in Rio Grande do Sul, it is considered the fourth largest port in Brazil;

Port of Suape: located on the coast of Pernambuco, it is the fifth largest port in Brazil;

Port of Vitória, in the State of Espírito Santo: it is the sixth largest port in Brazil;

Port of Manaus, in Manaus: located in the State of the Amazonas region, it is the seventh largest port in Brazil.

The major ports in Brazil and their main figures

The models of ports currently represented in Brazil are formed by six different systems:

Organized Ports: These are ports managed by public agents and belong to the Federal Government. They go through a bidding process, when facilities are leased to be operated by private port operators;

Private Terminal of Exclusive Use (TUP-E in Portuguese): They are private terminals built only to handle the terminal owner’s cargo. They get permission by a formalized adhesion contract, without any bidding or fees payments;

Private Terminals of Mixed Use (TUP-M in Portuguese): They are also private terminals built to handle the terminal owner’s cargo, with third parties’ cargos subsidiary, by means of authorization according to the current legislation;

Small Public Port Facilities (IP4 in Portuguese): These are facilities used to berth regional vessels that transport people and goods;

Cargo Transshipments Stations (ETC in Portuguese): According to ANTAQ Resolution 2520, it is a “port facility located outside the organized port area, exclusively used for cargo transshipments operations destined to or coming from inland navigation“;

Private Tourism Terminals (IPTur in Portuguese): These are terminals for the disembarking and transit of crew members, luggage, passengers, and also for the supply of tourism-oriented vessels. Such terminals can only function by means of authorization.

As you can see, each one of models above has its specific characteristics and forms of operation throughout the Brazilian market.

The main Brazilian ports in terms of cargo volume

When observing the cargo volume movement, the Port of Santos is first in relation to imports and exports. In 2022, the port of Santos set a historical record of cargo movement, being 10.5% above 2021. Furthermore, in terms of containers’ volume, it reached 5 million TEU (1 TEU = 1 20-foot container) in 2022. Since its maximum capacity is 5.3 million TEUs per year, it was pretty close to reach its full capacity. Regarding the flow of ships, over the last 12 months, it totaled 5202 attractions, so it also increased up to 7.1% compared to 2021.

Let’s get to other figures, then!

Export

In exports, as mentioned above, the Port of Santos is first, as in 2022 more than US$96 billion dollars and more than 109 billion net kilograms were handled.

The Port of Itaguaí, in Rio de Janeiro, took the second place, and third is the Port of Paranaguá, in Paraná. The Port of Rio Grande, appears in seventh place among the main ports with cargo movements in the year of 2022.

Imports

About imports, we do not observe a very different scenario, with Santos being first, after handling more than US$77 billion in 2022. Paranaguá rises to second place, since it handled US$22 billion, followed by the port of Itajaí, in Santa Catarina, with a considerable movement for 2022.

The Port of Rio Grande appears only in tenth place concerning the imports category, although it still has a significant participation for the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
